Symptoms of Plica Polonica
The following are some of the symptoms of Plica Polonica:
• Symptoms may also include an inflamed scalp with bad odour.
• It may be associated with damage to sections of the cuticle (the hair-shaft’s tough protective outer layer) hereby exposing a moist sticky cortex to which other similarly effected hair shafts adhere.
Risk factors responsible:
i) Diseased hair shafts
ii) Hair with natural kinks.
iii) Shampoos used and water quality (affects cuticle –leaves cortex exposed).
iv) Poor hair care and grooming techniques.
v) Lice infestation, chemical exposure,
vi) Hair extensions (cuticle imbrication matching and, use of additional glue).
The condition may follow an acute infestation with pediculus capitis.
