Ulcerative Colitis

Definition

Ulcerative Colitis also known as Colitis Ulcerosa (UC) is the chronic disease of the large intestine. It is an inflammation bowel disease (IBD) wherein a person experiences ulceration and inflammation on the lining of the large intestine. It is a condition where the tiny open sores called ulcers develops in the large intestine (colon) producing mucous and pus. A person undergoing this critical condition often experiences abdominal discomfort and recurrent emptying of large intestine. It is a serious inflammatory condition of digestive tract. Another similar IBD as ulcerative colitis is condition of Crohn’s disease. Crohn’s disease affects the small intestine whereas ulcerative colitis affects the large intestine.

Ulcerative colitis: Its types:

Except for the lower section of the small intestine called ileum, the inflammation rarely occurs to the small intestine. Following are the types of ulcerative colitis depending upon which part of intestine it affects:

Rectum - Proctitis
Sigmoid colon - Sigmoiditis

Causes of Ulcerative Colitis

The exact cause of ulcerative colitis is not known till date but there are some factors that can be constituted as the cause for the problem.

• Abnormal activation of immune system in intestines
• Various genetic factors like: the chances of abnormal immune system can be genetically inherited    leading to inflammation and ulceration in colon.
